Maria (Majdecki) Valandro passed away peacefully of natural causes in Wrentham on Saturday, December 26, 2020, at the age of 89. She was surrounded by loving family. Maria was predeceased by her beloved husband, Hugo Valandro, and her dear son, Ugo Valandro. Maria is survived by her devoted daughter, Marie Todaro, and Marie's caring husband, Nick Todaro; by her four grandchildren, Ray Souza III, Nicole Souza, Danielle Souza, and Michelle McFarland; by her four great-grandchildren, Devin, Liam, Ella, and Brian; and by her dear friends, Frank Larkin and Danny Anselmo.
Maria was born in the beautiful countryside of Dijon, France, to parents Joseph and Katarina Majdecki. In Dijon, she met and married her husband, Hugo, and later emigrated to the United States (Boston, MA) in the early 1950s. Hugo's passion for and artistry with creating fine French cuisine, coupled with Maria's unflagging work ethic, were the essential ingredients for success in the food service industry: Hugo and Maria established in the late 1960s Le Bourguignon, a restaurant specializing in expertly crafted French dishes. Hugo and Maria often treated their young grandchildren to homemade treats such as escargots de Bourgogne, pâté, and soupe à l'oignon.
Maria—better known to her family as Mémé—loved gardening at her Dedham home, entertaining guests with delicious dinners, and appreciating the loyal, warm company of cats, particularly her Nooshki. When not at home, she spent much of her time with her daughter and family, playing gin rummy, snacking on baguette slices and Brie, and relishing a glass of good red wine.
Maria's life will be celebrated during a private service at Carroll-Thomas Funeral Home in Hyde Park. Then she will be laid to rest beside her husband. To share a remembrance or offer a condolence in Maria's online guestbook, please visit thomasfuneralhomes.com
